This article reviews the existing healthcare provisions for elderly in different countries with special reference to India since 1999. Present situation demands redefining the current policies to effectively navigate the complexities of the continuum of care and finding available resources for long-term care planning. Financial, social, moral and health concerns are examined along with the role of home-based and preventive healthcare services in improving the quality of life. Effective geriatric healthcare services need to stress upon interdisciplinary approach to address the individualized needs with the provision of training to healthcare professionals and family care-givers.&#13;
