Hence the use of cervical ripening agents prior to conventional methods of induction is now a standard practice. Intra cervical application of Dinoprostone gel is the gold standard for cervical ripening. Objective: To study the effect of Dinoprostone gel to induce labor in post term pregnancies in both primigravida cases and multigravida cases by evaluating its safety and efficacy in postdatism, and monitoring the rate of increase in the Bishop__ampersandsignrsquo;s score and ADRs. Materials and methods: The study was carried out in a tertiary care teaching hospital. The study was carried out from November 2007 to April 2008, which included patients in their 40th week of gestation or more. The data were collected from the patient__ampersandsignrsquo;s case sheet. Results: The mean gestational age was 287.4 and 285.7 days for primigravida cases and multigravida cases respectively. It was observed that 16 cases of the primigravida and 21 cases of the multigravida required only one application of Dinoprostone gel. About 5 cases of primigravida and 3 cases of multigravida required two applications of Dinoprostone gel. The common side effect observed was headache. Conclusion: Dinoprostone gel was more effective in increasing the Bishop__ampersandsignrsquo;s score in multigravida cases when compared with primigravida cases. Intra cervical application of Dinoprostone gel was safe and acceptable method to induce labour in post-term pregnancies for both primigravida cases and multigravida cases.
