Extended layer were prepared by wet granulation method using different viscosity grade of Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC K100M and HPMC K200M) as polymers and immediate release layer were prepared by wet granulation method using superdisintegrant such as sodium starch glycolate and crosscarmellose sodium. Binder used was polyvinyl pyrollidone (PVP K-30). The tablets were then evaluated for the various physicochemical parameters and for the dissolution profile and then the prepared batches were compared with the Reference product. All the values were found to be within limit. The formulations (G5M8) having immediate release layer produces immediate effect within 45 second followed by extended release (95.47%) at 10 hrs and it comparable with innovator. The present study concluded that Bilayer tablets of Metformin Hydrochloride as an extended release layer and Glimepiride as an alternative to the immediate release conventional dosage form.
