Every individual mode of education has its own merits, drawbacks as well as their own sphere of effectiveness. However, successful teaching and learning requires active interaction between teachers and learners. Aims and objectives: To study the effectiveness of different methods of education __ampersandsignndash; Didactic* (one way), Socratic** (two way) and self-study among first year medical students. Materials and methods: An interventional study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of different methods of education among 1st year MBBS students of a medical college. Mainly 3 methods of education were used: Didactic, Socratic __ampersandsignamp; Self-study. Results: Results indicate that there were highly significant differences between the three methods of education(F=31.020, p=.000). Multiple comparisons between the methods revealed that improvement in knowledge gained is better in Socratic method as compared to that by Didactic method(p=.004) and self-study(p=.000) Conclusion: Study revealed that Socratic Method is the most effective method of education to impart knowledge as compared to Didactic method and self-study. It is suggested that Socratic Method should be encouraged in educational institutions.
