Materials and Methods: Poloxamer 407 is used in parenteral formulations as solubilizing and wetting agents for traditional, low-molecular weight organic drug molecules and as stabilizing agents for proteins and polypeptide drugs. Intravenous injection of poloxamer 407 was evaluated for the effect on the rabbit__ampersandsignrsquo;s serum cholesterol and triglyceride. Pretreatment, baseline readings were recorded. Rabbits were injected with 5.5mg/kg, 27.5 mg/kg and 137.5 mg/kg and its effect on blood chemistry were assessed at 2nd , 4 th and 7th day. The results of the study were expressed as mean__ampersandsignplusmn;S.E and data was analyzed by using by one way analysis of variance test (ANOVA). Values with P __ampersandsignlt; 0.05 were considered as significant. Result: The highest dose of Poloxamer 407 (137.5 mg/kg) significantly increased serum triglycerides in rabbits with the maximum increase observed at 2 d after injection. All the doses did not alter the serum cholesterol level. The lower doses of P-407 did not alter serum triglycerides or cholesterol significantly. Conclusion: Our result demonstrated that Poloxamer 407 in higher dose significantly increased serum triglycerides but low doses of this polymer may be used without the untoward hyperlipidemic effect.
