</ArticleTitle><ArticleLanguage>English</ArticleLanguage><FirstPage>01</FirstPage><LastPage>10</LastPage><AuthorList><Author>Chetna Jain</Author><AuthorLanguage>English</AuthorLanguage></AuthorList><Abstract>Background of study: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is initial diagnostic tool to diagnose any swelling in major salivary glands and some minor salivary glands. Superficial location of salivary glands makes them most favorable target for FNAC. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the overall advantages of FANC as compared to formal biopsy with respect to hospitalization, cost-effectiveness, speed. Research Methodology: FNAC were carried out on 70 patients who were suffering from the salivary gland lesions from January-2000 to December-2001. Histopathological follow-up data were acquired in 30 cases. The study was carried out to observe the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of FNAC for salivary gland lesions in comparison with histopathology. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1.5:1. Parotid gland was involved in 54.28%, submandibular gland in 44.28% and other minor salivary glands in 1.42% of patients. There were 54.27 % cases of non-neoplastic lesions and 45.31% cases of neoplastic lesions on biopsy. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of FNAC for malignant neoplastic lesions were 92.3%, 100%, 100%, and 93.3%, respectively, whereas for benign neoplastic lesions, they were 93.3%, 100%, 100 %, and 92.3%, respectively. Conclusion: Fine-needle aspiration cytology is a very useful diagnostic tool for superficial palpable tumors as salivary glands. It is the safe, simple, minimally invasive with low-cost routine office procedure. Delay in diagnosis with conventional histopathological method is overcome and this would allow us prompt further management.&#xD;

</ArticleTitle><ArticleLanguage>English</ArticleLanguage><FirstPage>14</FirstPage><LastPage>19</LastPage><AuthorList><Author>Badwaik R.T.</Author><AuthorLanguage>English</AuthorLanguage><Author> Dashputra A.V.</Author><AuthorLanguage>English</AuthorLanguage><Author> Gupta M.</Author><AuthorLanguage>English</AuthorLanguage></AuthorList><Abstract>Objectives: Levofloxacin is pure (-)-(S)-enantiomer of the racemic drug substance ofloxacin, which was introduced in 1997. It is a third generation fluoroquinolones with a wide spectrum of action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, anaerobic microorganisms and atypical pathogens. Various analytical methods have been reported in scientific literature for the analysis of levofloxacin in pharmaceutical formulations. The price of different oral formulations of levofloxacin varies considerably. Generic tablets are cheaper than branded ones. In order to assure the bioequivalence and therapeutic equivalence, pharmaceutical equivalence study needs to be investigated and hence the present study was undertaken to compare the pharmaceutical equivalence of the generic and some branded oral formulations of levofloxacin and to compare the findings of spectrophotometer and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Methods: Levofloxacin was estimated by using UV spectrophotometer. Linearity curve was obtained in the concentration range of 2-12&#xB5;g/ml at 293.7 nm using pure levofloxacin and 0.1 N HCl as a solvent system. The concentration in various formulations was obtained by using calibration curve. The quantitative measurements were also obtained by HPLC at 293 nm by using mobile phase consisting of 0.05M phosphate buffer: acetonitrile (80:20, v/v) with 0.2% of triethylamine and pH adjusted to 3 with phosphoric acid. Results: All formulations were found to be pharmaceutically equivalent. The spectrophotometric method was comparable to HPLC. Conclusion: Being simple, rapid, reliable and cost-effective spectrophotometer method can be applied for routine analysis of levofloxacin and for pharmacokinetic study.&#xD;

Findings in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism and primary hypothyroidism illustrates that even minor alterations in serum thyroid function tests can have important consequences for a variety of thyroid hormone-related clinical endpoints. In the last few years, several studies described variations in hematological parameters in hypothyroidism-a type of thyroid dysfunction, where Hb, MCV, RDW, HCT and RBC: a several hematological indices have shown substantial increases than normal reference range in this disorder and have correlation with minor alteration of serum thyroid hormones. In this review, we discuss the variations in hematological parameters in hypothyroidism and its management. We discuss the possible consequences of these studies for the patients and also new insight in thyroid hormone action and haematology from these data. We have also touched about the screening of thyroid profile and haematological parameters,an important information to general public for clinical and diagnostic use.&#xD;

As aggressive or inappropriate therapy of hyponatraemia can be more harmful than the condition itself, clinicians should be familiar with the diagnosis and management of various forms of hyponatraemia. Objective: To assess the socio-clinical profile of the patients admitted in the Intensive care unit with hyponatraemia &amp; to assess predictors of mortality in the study population Research Methodology: This prospective observational study was done in the Intensive care unit of SSKM Hospital / IPGME&amp;R, Kolkata during April 2011 to March 2012 among the patients having serum sodium level less than135 mmol/l. The data were collected on predesigned questionnaires which include age, gender, clinical findings, complications and laboratory tests. SPSS 16.0 version was used for statistical analysis Results: Males are more commonly affected than females. Chronic liver disease is most common underlying condition associated with hyponatraemia. On multivariate logistic regression analysis serum sodium was found to be statistically significant predictor for mortality (as p value &lt; 0.05). Conclusion: Hyponatraemia could predict the mortality in intensive care unit patients, so proper emphasis should be given to address the situation&#xD;
